Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for children in the United States, making prevention especially important for this age group. Use these tips to reduce the risk of poisoning accidents in your home.
- Read labels carefully to determine which products are toxic. Check the labels for cleaning products, laundry detergents, medications, art supplies, cosmetics, plants, and pesticides.
- When using hazardous products, never leave them unattended. Let the answering machine pick up an incoming phone call or ask someone else in the house to answer the door. It only takes a few seconds for a child to ingest enough poison to cause serious injury or death.
- Don’t let children go through your handbag, as some of the products in your purse may contain harmful ingredients.
- Resist the temptation to mix cleaning products to create stronger products. This can create toxic fumes.
- Do not take toxic products out of their original packaging. The packaging contains important information about the ingredients which you will need in the event of an emergency. Poison control center representatives and emergency medical personnel may ask you for specific information found on the label or package.
- Store poisonous items out of the reach of children. Install safety locks on any cabinets that contain hazardous chemicals.
Even when you do your best to keep toxic products away from your kids, others aren’t always as careful. Babysitters and daycare workers may make careless mistakes that lead to poisoning accidents under their supervision. On April 9, an Arizona father experienced a parent’s worst nightmare when his sons never returned from their afternoon bike ride. After realizing they were missing, the father called the police and initiated a search. The Arizona Republic reports that the father found his sons’ bikes alongside a local canal. There were no signs of his sons at first, but a bystander then pulled the younger son out of the water alive. When police found the older brother he had no pulse and was not breathing, he died that evening.
Now nearly 4,000 people have joined forces to campaign for barriers around unprotected waterways like Gilbert Canal. Barriers 4 Brenan has members from at least 12 states, all of whom want to help other families avoid the loss of a child. The Arizona Department of Health Services reports a total of four life-threatening incidents at Arizona canals in 2009. Although pool-related incidents are more common, canal drowning incidents in Arizona occur every year.
Unfortunately, the organizations that own these canals are resistant to placing fencing around them. They cite lack of funding as to why they refuse to install protective fencing. Company representatives suggest educating parents and their children about the dangers of canals so they will stay away from them without each organization having to install fencing or other protective measures.

A 7-year-old boy was killed in a Phoenix swimming pool accident during Fourth of July festivities. According to a news report, the fatal drowning accident occurred near 35th Avenue and Baseline in Phoenix. The accident occurred in the backyard of a home a family moved into just four days prior to the incident. There were 17 adults at the party yet none of them saw the young victim in time to prevent the tragic drowning. A cousin of the 7-year-old pulled him out of the water. It appears from the report that the many adults and children at the party simply lost track of the little boy during the party.
According to Arizona swimming pool drowning liability law, swimming pool owners can be held accountable for any drowning or near-drowning that occurs on their property or on their watch. Under Arizona statute 36-1681, all bodies of water deeper than 18 inches must be protected by an enclosure. Sadly, even proper enclosures cannot prevent all drowning accidents.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in every five fatal drowning incidents involves a child 14 years of age or younger. Whenever a child is injured or killed in an Arizona swimming pool accident, it must be determined if negligence played a part in the incident. In some drowning cases, compensation may be available for the victim or the victim’s family.

A 12-year-old Arizona boy was killed in an early morning Brisbee mobile home fire that remains under investigation. According to a news report, the boy woke his father to alert him of smoke. When the father and his girlfriend exited the mobile home to grab a hose they discovered that the 12-year-old autistic boy was still inside. The mobile home was engulfed in flames and the young victim was later found partially hidden under a bed. It is unclear what started the fire or if the materials used in the mobile home made it prone to dangerous fires.
Mobile homes are notorious for being fire hazards. The design and makeup of mobile homes often encourages a small fire to spread quickly. Common causes of manufactured home fires include electrical issues, defective gas tanks, lit cigarette butts, wood burning stoves and kitchen fires that quickly get out of hand. It is common for mobile homes to not have smoke alarms and for mobile home properties to not have accessible sprinkler systems and fire hydrants.
When someone is killed in an Arizona mobile home fire an investigation will be needed to determine what caused the fire and if anyone may be held liable for the damages suffered. In cases involving negligence, the family of someone killed in a fire may be able to file a wrongful death claim to hold the at-fault party liable for their loss.
