What to Say to a Grieving Person after a Wrongful Death in Arizona

"Am I Supposed to Feel like this?" written by Yulee Triplett Schafer focuses on what to expect when a tragedy devastates someone’s life. After a close friend or family member has lost a loved one, it is normal to want to give that person advice and help relieve their pain.

When talking to a loved one or friend about a loss, it is important to use the person’s name. By using the name of the person that has passed away you are showing your friend that you remember the person. Saying things like "I am so sorry for your loss" is both simple and genuine according to Schafer. It is also important to show your friend or loved one that you are available to help them through the grieving process in any way necessary. Here are a few other helpful phrases:

  • I wake up early and stay up late, call me anytime of the day of night if you need to talk.
  • I don’t know how you feel, but I am here for you.
  • I don’t think I can say anything to make the pain go away, but I am here to listen.
  • Please know that I am here for you and truly care.
  • One of my favorite memories of (persons name) is…
  • I am here for you if you need to talk.
  • You and your family are in my prayers.

Schafer also says in her book that offering a hug or holding a hand can be just as helpful as words. In some cases comfort can be provided by just being near a person and not saying anything.
